O Atlético Mineiro, após participar por cinco oportunidades de uma final, se sagra campeão da Libertadores pela primeira vez, vencendo nos pênaltis (4 a 3), após vencer o jogo no tempo regulamentar e prorrogação por 2 a 0 contra o time do Olímpia do Paraguai, o qual havia vencido o primeiro jogo da final por 2 a 0.
